MetaWhatsApp Calling API

A major WhatsApp Business platform launch that had to land with two audiences at once — engineers who care about implementation, and marketers who care about outcomes. Ten interviews in downtown San Francisco, plus motion graphics that made the UI the story.

The Challenge

Meta was announcing the Calling API — a significant update to the WhatsApp Business platform. The difficulty wasn't the news. It was the room.

A launch like this has to convince two very different people simultaneously. Technical decision-makers want to know how it works and what it takes to implement. Marketing leaders want to know what it changes for their customers. Pitch it too technical and the business side tunes out. Pitch it too abstract and the engineers stop trusting it.

Most product launches solve this by splitting into two pieces of content. We didn't.

The Work

Two days of live-action production in downtown San Francisco, built around ten interviews with international developers and product owners.

We led with authentic storytelling rather than feature narration — real people describing what the API made possible, which is a message both audiences accept. Value props emerge from the story instead of being asserted over it.

Then motion graphics. A calling API is largely invisible: the product experience lives inside an interface. Animation let us bring the UI and UX on screen dynamically, so the thing being announced is actually visible in the film.

The Result

A hero story, micro content, cutdowns, and social versionings — one narrative that worked for engineers and marketers without watering down for either.

This was Meta's second project with Flagship.
